Het grote nadeel van Skype is dat er gebruik gemaakt wordt van een gesloten protocol. Dit betekent dat alleen de door Skype beschikbaar gestelde software gebruikt kan worden.

Mijn ervaring is dat de Betamax diensten redelijk betrouwbaar zijn. De tarieven wisselen nogal eens, maar het blijft goedkoop. De dienstverlening van Budgetphone is wat mij betreft uitstekend.

Pbxes heeft de laatste tijd wat problemen gegeven (veel down time), daarom maak ik er geen gebruik meer van. Mijn modem/router is inmiddels vervangen door een Fritz!Box, waar ik mijn dialplan (gebeld worden via Budgetphone en bellen via een Betamax clone) makkelijk in kwijt kan. Asterisk werkt ook goed op dit apparaat.

Hoi, bedankt voor dit informatieve verhaal.

Misschien heb ik iets gemist, maar kan je Skype ook zo aansluiten, dat deze via het Zyxel modem loopt?
Dat lijkt mij ideaal, aangezien Telfort geen tweede nummer ondersteunt.

Zou je daar misschien eens iets aan kunnen wijden? Bij voorbaat dank!

Hoe zit het eigenlijk met de betrouwbaarheid van deze VoIP diensten? Het lijkt mij dat telfort meer “garantie” geeft, op een kwalitatief goede verbinding, terwijl zo’n externe VoIP-leverancier niet echt gebonden is aan allerlei contracten?

“Long story short, I got the debian source package for vdr-plugin-opensc from mirak’s ppa https://launchpad.net/~mirak-mirak/+archive/ppa , then changed the vdr-sc source inside with hg clone from current source, then applied some patches to the Makefile in order to build successfully and finally build the packages with dpkg-buildpackage.

I might put up a detailed guide if more people are interested in this.”

The combination vdr 1.7.10 + vdr-sc I managed to get working as mentioned above.
The combination vdr 1.7.11 + vdr-sc however not entirely: I think that there is something which needs to be adapted in the plugin loader script, because I got this same error too.

But when I started vdr directly in the shell instead as a service like this
$ vdr -P sc
I got it working. Unfortunately I don’t have vdr anymore on my pc so I can’t check anything anymore: I replaced vdr with tvheadend and got this working within an hour

ps: smartcard updates in Tvheadend do work but only for Conax which I currently have (DVB-T digitenne)

Nice overview – many thanks for publishing. But I have one request – if you can find the time can you please add an entry about installing Karmic Koala on an SD or SDHC card (or USB thumbdrive)? In this way you can leave the Xandros or Windows OS on the SSD intact and have a Ubuntu/Xandros multiboot.

The reason for my question is that a full install of Ubuntu on a SD / SDHC card or USB drive or USB disk can be problematic. GRUB does not always like it (refuses to boot from external devices) and especially USB drives are not automatically flagged as bootable.

Actually I haven’t used the access point very much, because it appeared to be unstable when I use NFS (the PC/Ubuntu stops responding completely; this doesn’t happen when I use the wired connection) and the wireless range was limited (the Asrock has no external antenna).

I didn’t see your deauthentication/authentication problem. Maybe it has to do with encryption. I used WPA2 only.

Nice blog! I have done basically the same thing and found this posting very informative. I’m using a Dell Mini 9 running Ubuntu 9.10. It is acting as a NAT router/firewall (UFW with NAT rules), DHCP server (dhcp3-server) and AP (hostapd with Atheros AR928x based card). My question is related to the performance of your AP. While my AP configuration seems to work for the most part, my clients drop their connection regularly. Based on syslog this seems to be due to some kind of deauthentication/authentication issue. The only way to get the clients to reconnect is to manually restart hostapd.

I’m curious to know if you have seen this behavior on your AP as well. If you have, how have you resolved the issue?

It seems to me that the firmware is loaded now: “found a ‘…’ in warm state”, but communication with the device fails: “read eeprom failed” and “MAC address reading failed”, so you have to consider that the device is not functioning properly, although it still could be a communication problem, related to the USB bus or driver.

Maybe it is best to try if the device initializes correctly using another PC.

Pinning the kernel is required for newcs only.
